Memory with a System – The Memory Project at Schloss Torgelow

At the boarding school Schloss Torgelow, significant achievements are not only made in class. Some of the most exciting and sustainable learning impulses arise outside the timetable. An outstanding example of this is the memory project, which has been led by Steffen Bütow for many years.

What started as a special extracurricular offering has today become a staple in the Torgelow boarding school’s life. Numerous students have not only learned new study techniques through memory training, but have also exceeded their own expectations – with national championship titles, television appearances, and a newfound self-confidence in tow.

A project with heart, mind, and method.

Steffen Bütow, a successful memory athlete himself and the commercial director of the boarding school, brings all his experience, creativity, and enthusiasm to the project. In small groups and with individual support, he guides his protégés during training. It is not only about memory capacity but also about concentration, joy in thinking, and the discovery of one’s own strengths.

The project takes place outside of regular lessons. It is voluntary and often the beginning of an extraordinary development. Many participants report how much the techniques help them in everyday school life – with vocabulary learning, structuring content, or giving presentations.

From boarding school to the big stage

The list of successes that have resulted from this project is long. Students from Schloss Torgelow were guests on television shows such as “Wetten, dass..?”, “Deutschlands Superhirn” or “Klein gegen Groß”. They solved complicated puzzles in their heads, memorized large amounts of data, or recited entire cycles of poetry from memory.

The Torgelower consistently impress with top performances at memory championships in Germany and beyond. Names like Romy Hämling, Ann-Kristin Bock, Johann Halluschky, or Althea Heidemüller represent remarkable placements in state and national championships, and even at the world level.

You can learn to learn – and do it with joy.

The project focuses on memory techniques that are helpful for everyone. Steffen Bütow conveys these methods with enthusiasm and patience. It is not about memorization in the classical sense, but rather about creative, visual, and structured thinking approaches.

For all those who have become curious, he has compiled five practical tips that demonstrate how memory training works – easily done at home:

  1. Visualize The brain remembers images better than abstract information. The more unusual the image, the better it stays in memory.
  2. Connecting New content is easier to remember when it is linked to something familiar. For example, if someone wants to remember a shopping list, they imagine a tomato sandwich with milk.
  3. Use mnemonic devices Rhymes, stories, or word plays help with memory. A classic is: “Never wash without soap” for the cardinal directions.
  4. Systematic repetition Repeated practice is important, but with breaks. This way, what has been learned is solidified in the long term.
  5. Emotional learning Content that is connected to emotions or personal stories stays particularly well in memory.

A project that opens perspectives

The memory project at Schloss Torgelow demonstrates what extracurricular education can achieve. It not only promotes intellectual abilities but also strengthens self-confidence and the courage to embrace new challenges.

Steffen Bütow accompanies this path with great commitment, a clear vision, and much joy in the development of young people. He is a trainer, an inspirer, and a trailblazer – and has created a project that is as exceptional as the talents that emerge from it.
