Abitur at a high level

Schloss Torgelow: School

High school diploma (Abitur) on a high level

A boarding school with academic standards.

We challenge our students, expect their commitment, and show them the way to a successful future already in school. Those who expect more from “school” will find the challenge they are looking for with us. Our students should be proud of their achievements. Positive feedback is therefore very important to us in order to motivate our students to give their best. They should take pride in what they have achieved and set goals for the future.

State-recognized high school diploma

As a state-recognized grammar school, Schloss Torgelow leads to the Abitur of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which is fully recognized in all federal states. We are very proud of the achievements of our students, who regularly rank among the best in the country.

Subject selection in the course level

It is important to us to offer our students a wide range of options so that they can use their individual strengths to achieve the best outcome for themselves.

In the upper secondary level, two advanced courses with five hours per week must be taken. One of these advanced courses must be German, Mathematics, a foreign language, or a natural science. The second advanced course can be chosen freely.

Mandatory core subjects with three weekly hours are German, Mathematics, a foreign language, a natural science, and History, unless the subject has already been taken as an advanced course. The following subjects must be chosen as two-hour mandatory subjects: Music or Art and Design, Religion or Philosophy, Sports, and Vocational Orientation.

Elective basic courses include foreign languages, natural sciences, and computer science with three class hours per week and/or additionally geography, social studies, economics, and project-based learning with two class hours per week, in which a thesis is written in a scientific, economic, or artistic field.

International Language Certificates

To enable our students to study abroad after graduation, acquiring internationally recognized language certificates is part of the foreign language curriculum. Earning the C1 certificate in English, which is recognized globally as proof of language proficiency, is included in the upper secondary curriculum. Schloss Torgelow is a certified testing center for Cambridge Assessment English. Students can take the exams for the Cambridge Assessment English certificates B1 Preliminary (PET), B2 First (FCE), C1 Advanced (CAE), and C2 Proficiency (CPE) on site. The DELF certificate for French and the DELE certificate for Spanish are also offered.

Examination subjects in the high school diploma (Abitur)

The final examination consists of three written and two oral exams. The two advanced courses are tested in writing. Among the subjects for the written and oral exams, the following subjects must be included: German, Mathematics, one social science, and one foreign language or one natural science.

Special learning achievement

Students also have the option to replace an oral exam with the results achieved in a special academic performance. The special academic performance can consist of various contributions: a competition entry funded by the federal states, a year/seminar paper, or the results of a comprehensive interdisciplinary project or internship.

Elective Subject: Economics

In the upper grades, we promote the entrepreneurial spirit of our students in the subject of Business. In the business@school competition organized by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), they learn economic thinking and develop their own business idea to market readiness. The course concludes with the TOPSIM – easy Management Seminar, “Learning business by doing business,” a business simulation that is used at many universities and colleges.

Developing perspectives

We place particular emphasis on the development of a professional perspective. To give our students an impression of what to expect in their studies or careers, internships and career information events are part of the upper school program.

In collaboration with professors and experienced practitioners, the students of Torgelow get a detailed insight into the contents of the most important degree programs and the tasks and requirements of individual professions.

Here you can find our guide to the upper school for download.

Career Day

At Career Day, we provide private and public universities with a platform to present themselves and their degree programs. This allows our students to decide early on which option is suitable for them. Additional workshops or weekly high school graduation projects offer our upper-level students the opportunity to acquire additional qualifications in business administration, law, memory techniques, biology, or rhetoric.

In collaboration with external institutions, we also offer seminars on topics such as presentation techniques, time and learning management, effective communication, and targeted application training for selection interviews at universities. The program is complemented by preparatory courses for the TMS (Medical Test) and the HAM-Nat.
