Latin Excursion: A Day in Ancient Times

A Day in Antiquity

At the beginning of July, 13 seventh-grade students undertook an exciting excursion to conclude their first year of Latin: Together with Ms. Rohr and Ms. Kühn, they visited the cast collection of the Heinrich Schliemann Institute for Classical Studies at the University of Rostock.

As part of the project “AG School and Museum,” which brings together students with university students, the guests from Torgelow received a varied tour of the impressive collection. The focus was on the topic “Greek Gods and Ancient Mythology.” Since our Latin students had already learned about the most important Roman deities and their Greek equivalents in class, they were well prepared to dive into the fascinating myths surrounding Athena, Zeus, Apollo, and Niobe. The stories came to life through impressive statues, reliefs, and thrilling narratives.

The subsequent workshop “Clothes Make the Man: The Garb of the Greeks and Romans” was particularly vivid and entertaining. Here, the students not only learned a lot about ancient clothing and its significance, but were also allowed to be active participants: Whether it was a chiton or a toga, those who wanted to could wrap themselves in an ancient garment and go on a time travel experience.

With many new impressions and lots of good spirits, an educational and vibrant day came to an end. The excursion not only provided a wonderful conclusion to the first year of Latin, but also stirred a desire for more. Latin is alive, and we look forward to coming back!
