Episode 29: Kirsten meets….. Julia Massow
Episode 29 “Kirsten Meets……..”: Julia Massow, Artist in Copenhagen
My encounter with Julia had its own color, so to speak. It continues to resonate, it echoes. My visit to Julia Massow in Copenhagen was delicate, intense, and inspiring.
Julia graduated from high school in 2005 at Schloss Torgelow. After graduation, her path initially led her to the “Institute of Design” in Hamburg. After her studies, she had stops in Australia, again in Hamburg, and around the world. And what has been shaped over all these years is now visible: Julia is a freelance graphic designer and artist, living in Copenhagen and creating projects that touch people.
In her works, illustration, typography, design, and meaning merge. She works for publishers, institutions, museums, designs books, image worlds, campaigns – always with a deep sensitivity for aesthetics, clarity, and emotion. Her works are quiet yet strong. And they carry a distinctive signature: Julia’s signature.
I was allowed to accompany her for a day – through her apartment, her studio, her Copenhagen. We talked about design, about life, about Schloss Torgelow, about family, and about what remains. We drank coffee, ate cinnamon rolls and muesli buns, were creative and “dressed up.” And throughout the entire time, there was this magic that cannot be explained – only felt.
Julia is a person who doesn’t need to be loud to say something great. Her art speaks of longing, of change, of beauty in the inconspicuous. She has a keen sense for language, form, and feeling. And anyone who speaks with her quickly realizes: Here sits a person who walks their path with great clarity. And who never forgets what is important.
Thank you for this day.
Dear Julia, you have touched my heart. Your Copenhagen is, in my memory, a place full of light, tranquility, and creativity. I am so grateful to you for your openness, your trust, and for letting me into your life – for an afternoon that was so much more than a visit.
You show that art is an attitude. And that design can be more than a profession: a gift, an expression, a language.
I will think about this day for a long time. Thank you.
