Dragon Boat Racing 2015
Torgelow students successful in dragon boat racing.
On Monday, June 15, 2015, it was finally time. For the 6th, 7th/8th, and 9th/10th grades, the 11th Rostock Student Dragon Boat Championships meant “ARE YOU READY – ATTENTION – GO!” Despite initial rain and strong winds, everyone aimed to paddle successful races and succeeded.
The sixth-grade students, who participated in a dragon boat race for the first time, already showed in the qualifying races that they would compete for the top spots in this contest. In the final race at the end, they then mobilized their last reserves of strength as a team and won the school championship in their grade level decisively with a length of the boat in advance.
In the 7th/8th grade levels, which take dragon boat as a school subject, the strength in a final sprint was not quite enough for victory. With just a second behind the first boat, they crossed the finish line as second with a lead of over a boat length.
The students of the 9th and 10th grades, who, like every year, voluntarily participated in the race and bravely ventured to Rostock with just three training sessions beforehand, were in third place after the heats. This meant that in the final, they had to give everything to move up. After a fantastic start, it initially looked like they could win the race. Everyone mobilized their last reserves of strength to lead the boat to victory. After crossing the finish line, no one knew yet who had won, as the first three boats crossed the finish almost simultaneously. The finish photo had to be evaluated first. Unfortunately, in the end, they finished in second place that day in their age group, “only” eight hundredths of a second behind the first boat.
We are all looking forward to the next races at the state finals in Rostock on Monday, July 6.
