Recommended reading from eighth grade: with stars, etc.
Elisabeth, an eighth-grade student at our boarding school, can always be found with a book in her hand—which makes me particularly happy. She reads with remarkable enthusiasm and is wonderful at explaining what captivates her and why. That’s why I asked her to write a reading recommendation for us. :
My personal highlight this month was definitely “Das Wüstenmädchen – Die Gilde der Gepardenführer” (The Desert Girl – The Guild of Cheetah Leaders) by Laura Trappmann. It is the debut novel by the author from Hürth and takes us to Yesharim, a city in a fictional oriental desert world where humans and cheetahs live together and defend the city. The protagonist, Karsa, has fled there with her cheetah, Bezaid, and meets Qemal and his cheetah, Ghanijah, who take the two of them to the guild. Spoiler alert: The two do not end up together, but there is still a love story.
I like the book because it’s exciting and I find Karsa and the world appealing. Overall, I would give the book 4.5 out of 5 stars (but only because nothing and no one can beat Rebecca Yarros’ Fourth Wing).
The second volume will be published in fall 2026 at the latest, as the author confirmed to me upon request.
