Award for our school honey in premium quality

A sum that promises success: Our school project “More than honey” was allowed to participate for the first time in this year’s honey awards of the German Beekeepers’ Association. The festive award ceremony took place during the MELA, the largest agricultural trade fair in Northern Germany. It was an exciting day full of new impressions, encounters, and expert discussions.

We are especially proud of the result. Our honey has been awarded the premium quality label and additionally received a bronze medal in its category. This recognition shows that our careful work at the beehives and when extracting the honey truly pays off.

In honey evaluation, numerous quality characteristics are assessed, including conductivity, pH value, water content, smell, taste, cleanliness, labeling, and the so-called invertase activity. In addition, a sample is sent to the laboratory for pollen analysis and chemical examination.

A total of 54 honeys from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern participated, of which 36 could be evaluated. 24 of them were awarded bronze, silver, or gold, and our school honey was right in the middle. We are thus the first school beekeeping operation to ever participate in this award.

We were especially pleased with the praise from the jury. The experts emphasized how high-quality our honey is and that we can be very satisfied – especially because we practice this true craft alongside our everyday school life with students.

We have learned a lot about the high demands for real quality honey and take motivation from this experience into the next year. Because one thing is certain: next time we want to be part of it again and maybe even aim even higher.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributes to our project with passion, patience, and enthusiasm. You make “More than honey” something truly special.
