Thomas Lu, a 12th-grade student, represented the Schloss Torgelow boarding school in the national round of the International Physics Olympiad<\/a>.<\/i> At the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) in Greifswald, a total of 50 participants from twelve federal states qualified for the round in two preliminary rounds, competing against approximately 700 physics young talents nationwide. <\/i><\/p>\n\n

Physics Love<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Thomas is a calm and reserved student who loves physics. His passion for the subject is clearly evident in the physics advanced course and while working on the problems of the International Physics Olympiad. The team from Schloss Torgelow is proud of Thomas. He had distinguished himself in the first two rounds against many other physics-enthusiastic students from all over Germany and started enthusiastically into the national round in Greifswald. <\/p>\n\n

Qualification for the finals<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

50 students were invited to compete with each other in a “physical” way for a week. In the end, the seventeen best young physicists qualified for the final round in J\u00fclich. Here, the top five participants will be determined. They will represent Germany at the Physics Olympiad in June 2025 in Bulgaria. <\/p>\n\n

A great week<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Thomas narrowly missed making it into the top seventeen students. However, he still beamed at the award ceremony at the end of an intense and challenging week. Why? Working on and engaging with the tasks had been a lot of fun for him. The exchange with other students contributed to him feeling very comfortable, despite the competitive situation. <\/p>\n\n

The tasks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

From porous materials to interference patterns, sliding blocks, warm rods, and charged clouds, to measurements of unknown springs, Thomas faced tasks across physics over four mornings. The jury team, comprised of former participants and other physics students, had their hands and minds full evaluating the work. <\/p>\n\n

In addition to the exams, physics was also the focus during the national round. In the accompanying seminars, lectures, and institute visits, Thomas was able to further deepen his problem-solving skills alongside the other young talents and gain insights into research not only at the IPP but also at the other participating research institutions in Greifswald. <\/p>\n\n

Study intention solidified<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

At the end of the week, his physics honors class teacher, Mr. M\u00e4rzke, brought a very satisfied and enthusiastic student back to the boarding school. The exciting insights into research and the mutual exchange will resonate with Thomas for a long time and have solidified his desire to study physics. <\/p>\n\n
