German Athletics Championships in Bochum or internship in Tokyo?

The question should actually be easy to decide – but not for Willi Schmidt, the shooting star of the U18 age group in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. When organizing the internship that all 10th-grade students complete in their summer vacations at various companies, participating in the German Championships was out of the question, and the departure was booked for Saturday, July 12, 2025!

For the past 1.5 years, Willi has been training as part of the school’s team project and additionally with LAV Waren/Müritz e.V., focusing primarily on sprinting and long jump. Particularly in long jump, the North German champion in the U20 category improved his personal best by over a meter to 7.02m within a year, thereby also meeting the qualification standard for the German Championships. As a state champion, he also achieved this in the 100m and 200m events.

Despite exam stress and packing for Tokyo, Willi spontaneously and at the last minute decided to participate in the long jump competition, which was to take place on Friday in Bochum-Wattenscheid.

Against an impressive backdrop, Willi achieved his third-best competition with a jump of 6.60m in a very strong field of participants, but this time was still unable to compete for a medal.

Congratulations on an outstanding season and many great experiences in Tokyo!
